The Commission on State Capture (Zondo Commission) was told by probably its main witness so far, Angelo Agrizzi, that BOSASA paid a bribe to obtain a tender with the Northern Cape Department of Education (NCDE).
The former Chief Operating Officer of BOSASA told the inquiry that the company paid a bribe of R1.25m to secure a tender of R10m for the installation of CCTV and access control systems at NCDE. Agrizzi testified that one of the directors of Sondolo IT, Trevor Mthenjiwa, employed Bheki Gina as a technician at the company’s Kimberley office. Sondolo IT is a subsidiary of BOSASA and has changed its name to GTS in June 2017.
According to Agrizzi, Gina’s sister was employed at NCDE and held a position where she could ensure that the tender was awarded to Sondolo IT. Apparently the tender process was not followed and the procurement was made as an “emergency requirement”.
The NCDE indicated that “they are looking into the matter and will comment soon”.
