As Bafana Bafana gear up for their back-to-back matches against the Seychelles in the African Cup of Nations Qualifiers, the coaching staff faces the challenge of key players being injured in the past few days, leaving the staff with forced changes to the initial squad.
Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter has called up Cape Town City defender Thamsanqa Mkhize & Thembinkosi Lorch (Orlando Pirates). They replace injured duo of Thapelo Morena (Mamelodi Sundowns) & Vincent Pule (Orlando Pirates) who left the base camp yesterday. Morena suffered a hamstring injury in the prematch warm-up just before his side’s Absa Premiership clash against Bidvest Wits last weekend in Pretoria. Meanwhile, Pirates’ Pule suffered his injury last week in training and missed his team’s last weekend 1-1 draw against AmaZulu in Durban.
Thamsanqa Mkhize makes a return to the national side for the first time since the World Cup qualifiers against Senegal in Novenber 2017, and will be hoping to add to his three international caps. Thembinkosi Lorch will join up the squad only the second time after making his debut in the Four Nations tournament in Zambia in March. The camp also received a boost with the arrival of former national international striker, Shaun Bartlette as assistant coach. Bafana will have to play for a win and leave all the fancy stuff behind on Saturday if they want to book a flight to Cameroon.
There seems to be much promise when it comes to attack with Lebo Mothiba, Percy Tau, Phakamani Mahlambi and Dino Ndlovu, whose goal-scoring form in China can no longer be ignored. Baxter must go for pace, and maybe even power if both Mothiba and Ndlovu get to play a part in the two matches.
Bafana Bafana will play Seychelles at FMB Stadium on Saturday, 13 October 2018, before the return-leg on Tuesday, 16 October 2018.
