Sol Plaatje University hosted the award-winning author, Professor Zakes Mda, on Thursday, 28 March 2018 for the launch his new historical fiction titled “The Zulus of New York”. The launch was facilitated by Kimberley-born actor and playwright, Moagi Modise and attended by over 100 Mda fans.
The Zulus of New York is a glorious new novel which draws on the true history of “Farini’s Friendly Zulus”, men who were taken to Britain and then to America as performing curiosities. Zakes Mda further described his book as “a story aimed at humanising people who had their dignity stripped of them through the atrocities of the past”.
Discussions around his style of writing and his research methods kept the audience enthralled; and his colourful ability to tell stories and tease the audience led to sounds of laughter rippling through the SPU Library Auditorium.
Zakes Mda is a widely-respected wordsmith and hosting a launch of his book at SPU has contributed towards the vision of making the University and Kimberley a literary hub of South Africa.
