Cape Town City claimed the first leg advantage after a 1-0 victory over Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN 8 semi-final. Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy was happy with the 1-0 victory, but was disappointed that his side could not really punish the “best team in the league”.
“A 1-0 scoreline doesn’t reflect in the excitement the game had‚” McCarthy said. “Tactically we got it right in the second half. We were much better and played how we should have at the start of the game. As much as they are Sundowns players and are the best players we have got in the country‚ if we apply pressure higher up the pitch‚ then we started controlling things and starting to play our football.”
Taariq Fielies got the winner after blasting the ball into the net with 15 minutes remaining, handing CTC the victory and landing him the Man-of-the-Match Award.
This was however a second-string Sundowns team as they made nine changes to the team. The second leg in Pretoria may well prove to be an exciting contest.
