Motsepe family donates R1bn to fight COVID-19

Billionaire businessman and philanthropist Patrice Motsepe and his family have donated R1bn to help fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

Motsepe made the announcement in a virtual press conference on Saturday. He said several hundred million rands will be made available immediately. Motsepe said the objective was to save lives and curb the spread of the corona virus.

“We are purchasing sanitisers, disinfectants, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and are in discussions with the government, health workers and other stakeholders to assist with acquiring other equipment,” Motsepe stated.

He also stated that they are making resources available which are “essential for dealing with the Coronavirus pandemic”.

“We’ve been advised that access to water for regularly washing hands is crucial for slowing and limiting the spread of the Coronavirus. We are therefore providing water to poor rural and urban communities by purchasing water tanks, drilling and equipping for borehole water and also building sanitary facilities,” he emphasised.

Motsepe indicated that they will be working in conjunction with would be in partnership with traditional authorities, trade unions and NGOs.
