Barcelona defender Gerard Pique fears his team may risk defeat in the Champions League against Olympique Lyon at Camp Nou tomorrow if they do not improve on the performance displayed in their 1-0 victory over Real Valladolid over the weekend.
Pique’s concern stemmed from their hard fought win, that was secured through a penalty decision and was converted by the Barca maestro Lionel Messi in the 43th minute. The influential defender believes they need to significantly improve and quickly. “We didn’t play well, it wasn’t a good game,” he said at a post-match interview. “The only good news is the victory, to get back to winning three points but we have to improve. For Wednesday, we have to be better.” Barca will be without winger Ousmane Dembele who suffered a slight hamstring strain. Dembele has proved an influential performer for Barcelona this season despite a recent ankle injury.
Barcelona might have hopes to clinch a treble this season, having taken major steps toward securing a domestic double over the past three weeks.
Lyon has had a run where they have slayed many European giants and will try to do the same against Barcelona. Bruno Genesio’s side is currently unbeaten this season even though they faced Barcelona and Manchester City. Lyon Skipper Nabil Fekir who did not play in the first-leg due to suspension gave a friendly warning to Barcelona ahead of their clash.
The French midfielder said “We believe we can win but we know it’ll be a difficult match. We know their strengths, but we’ll give it everything. It was frustrating not being able to play in the first match due to my suspension” he said. Given the attacking nature of both sides, it is still a wonder how the game finished 0-0 after 90 minutes at Lyon, but with Barcelona’s prowess at home, the Spanish club are still favorites to go through to the quarterfinals.
