On Saturday, 16 March, Sol Plaatje University played against Pirates Cricket Club in a crucial first League T20 encounter at the N.J. Heyns Cricket field.
Pirates Cricket Club won the toss and elected to bat first. Sol Plaatje University’s opening bowlers, Kayden Van Der Merwe and Brandon Davids had early success by removing both opening batsmen by the second over. The first wicket fell for only 7 runs, when Brandon Davids bowled F. Boshoff having scored a mere 5 runs. Sol Plaatje University maintained the pressure as wickets continued to fall after the opening bowlers, with Chaswin Parker and Carl Julius adding their names to the wickets column.
Pirates Cricket Club batsmen struggled against the quality bowling of Sol Plaatje University, however one of their batsmen, Hubertus Odendaal scored an impressive 59 runs off 41 deliveries, including three fours and five sixes with a strike rate of 144. His innings helped Pirates Cricket Club to a rather modest, but defendable 102 all out.

Kayden Van Der Merwe took two wickets in his allotted four overs, conceding only 27 runs with an economy of 6.8 to the over. Brandon Davids also took two wickets for 19 runs after three overs with an economy of 6.3 to the over. Chaswin Parker conceded only 22 runs off his allotted four overs, claiming two wickets as well. Furthermore, the spinners played a crucial supporting role in containing the run rate of Pirates Cricket Club, as well as chipping in with wickets at vital stages. Carl Julius bowled four overs with one wicket for 22 runs, conceding 5.5 runs per over. Anthony Mabuya and Selvin Cloete also chipped in with one wicket a piece to wrap up the Pirates innings.

However, a few lusty blows from captain Daniel Oliphant and Anthony Mabuya, shifted the momentum in the favour of Sol Plaatje University. The momentum stayed with Sol Plaatje University, as they ultimately managed to clinch a victory by the scruff of the neck. Sol Plaatje scored 105/7 after 17.5 overs, beating Pirates Cricket Club by four wickets.
