Sol Plaatje University Students Take Northern Cape Crown
Meet Jack Hermans and Shantille Klaase, the two Sol Plaatje University (SPU) students who were crowned , on Saturday, 31 August:
Jack Hermans (20) is a first year Education (B.ed.) student at the Sol Plaatje University. Although from a small township, Alexandra in Johannesburg, he did not let that stop him. He started entering pageants only this year, and for his very first pageants, walked away as Mr Campus Sol Plaatje University 2019.
“I am very honoured to be crowned as Mr Northern Cape. My plan with this title is to get to learn and know more about the culture of the Northern Cape and the people. My main priority is also to promote a culture of lending a helping hand to communities, especially those that are underprivileged. I am very passionate about education and I’m looking forward to working hand in hand with Miss Northern Cape to influence the youth to strive for greatness in education, so as to unleash their potential” says Hermans.
He was also awarded the titles Mr Personality and Mr Photogenic.
His future plans are to obtain his degree in 2022 and to go out and reach the hearts of the youth and shape them into becoming future leaders.
“I would like to thank my family and friends for their support as well as our coach, Dartainian Lucas from Empire Modelling Empire”, says Hermans.
Shantille Klaase (20) is originally from Kamieskroon in Namaqualand and is a second year B.Com student. She has been partaking in pageants since the age of eleven and won the title of Miss Kamiesberg in 2018/19.
“I decided to enter Miss Northern Cape because of where I am from. Being from a small town with limited opportunities limits your abilities and prevents you from discovering your hidden potential. To be Miss Northern Cape means that others can look to me and say, ‘I can because she can’.
Klaase explains that pageants are a platform where you not only showcase your outer beauty, but also improve your social skills.
Apart from winning the main titled, Klaase also bagged the titles Debutante Achievement, Snr Miss Personality, Snr Public Choice and Snr Stylist Award.
“One of the main issues I would like to address during my reign us Anxiety and Depression, not only because it affects me personally but because I know that so many suffer in silence and that is proven by the amount of suicides in the province”.
Klaase is studying to be a chartered accountant but also aims to make her mark in the modelling industry. She always tells herself that she is going to be the first Miss South Africa that stutters.
“I just want to thanknLesley Jaartzen (finalist for Miss Drag SA 2019), Tamsin’s Beauty Lounge, Westend Vleismark, Kamiesberg Municipality, my family and friends who voted for me and Christopher Jacobs for the support in every way. I also want to thank all the models and my coach from Empire Model Academy”.
