SPU Open Day
Sol Plaatje University (SPU) opened its doors on Saturday, 3 August, to hundreds of prospective students, teachers and parents who streamed to the Examination Hall on the Central Campus to learn more about the young university. SPU exhibited its four schools, Education, Humanities, Economic and Management Science and Natural and Applied Sciences, manned by the lecturers in each field, who disseminated information and answered questions from excited learners and anxious parents.
SPU also donned the various sports such as Mixed Martial Arts, Aerobics, cricket and soccer to name a few. A favourite of the day was the campus tours done by student ambassadors who took the prospective students through the Moroka Hall of Residence, the Science building and the internationally acclaimed Student and Resource Centre, where the Deputy Vice Chancellor (DVC) Prof Jean Baxen, had a message for the group.
“Sol Plaatje University offers students state of the art residences and other facilities. Each first-year has access to unlimited WI-FI and receives a laptop upon arrival. We have the best academic facilities, but we also have a vibrant social life, with at least fifteen different sports offered. This is the university in the Northern Cape but not only for the Northern Cape,” says Baxen.
“What really sets this university apart from others is that we’re still so young. You have a real chance to be a legend. You have the chance to start new things and make an impact,” says student ambassador, Kim Maruping.
Applications for the 2020 academic year opened on Monday, 25 March and run until the end of September 2019.
