Theron High School wins COPA finals

The globally acclaimed Coca-Cola Provincial finals were held in Kimberley at the AR Abass Stadium on Saturday, where five schools competed, Iketleletso Middle School, Emmang Mmogo High School, Theron High School, Kakamas High School and Concordia Secondary School. The winner, Theron High School will represent the province at the COPA Coca-Cola National Finals after a hard fought 1-0 win over Kakamas High School.

The newly crowned champions made their intentions clear in their opening match with a 3-0 win over Emmang Mmogo High School. Their impressive form was carried into their second match when they easily brushed aside Iketleletso Middle School with the same score line to march into the final. Kakamas High School on the other hand had a rather tough road to the final. Their opening match against Concordia Secondary School concluded in an evenly contested 2-2 tie.

The return leg, which was a must win for both sides, saw Kakamas High School showing courage after coming back from a goal down to secure a 3-1 victory to set up a final against Theron High School. As expected, both sides came out highly determined for the win that would secure them a place in this year’s COPA Coca-Cola® National Finals in Durban. However, it was Theron High School who made use of their scoring opportunity with a crucial goal towards the final stages of the match to seal the victory and be crowned Northern Cape COPA Coca-Cola champions.

Applauding the talent on display in the Northern Cape was COPA Coca-Cola® Future Stars Camp scout, Jabulani Mendu who was accompanied by fellow scouts, Simba Marumo and Selekedi Mogale. “A big congratulations to Theron High School for making it to the COPA Coca-Cola® National Finals. The talent from their opponents was just as impressive and there was some eye-catching talent that we will be inviting to the COPA Coca-Cola Future Stars camp,” said Mendu. The COPA Coca-Cola moves to Mpumalanga next weekend and continues its journey to determine the provincial finalists who will play in the national finals later this year.
